What happens after you trade at Charles Schwab
Order status, the confirmation, and when to call Schwab about a fill.
Placed, filled, and settled
On Schwab, placed means the order was accepted. Filled means a trade happened at a price and size you can read under Order Status. A partial fill means you received some of the shares, not all. Settled means the trade has cleared under Schwab’s rules. You can often sell sooner than you can withdraw the cash.
Read the confirmation the same day
Check the symbol, the side, the quantity, and the price. If something is wrong, contact Schwab quickly at 800-435-4000 or through the message center after you log in. Waiting a week turns a simple correction into a dispute. Northline can help you describe the error. Schwab has to make the correction.
Statements, taxes, and what protection does not cover
Schwab issues statements and, for taxable accounts, tax forms such as a 1099. IRAs are reported differently. Keep the statements. This is not tax advice.
SIPC protection, where it applies at a member broker, is about missing securities if the brokerage fails. It does not restore the value of a stock that declined. Read Schwab’s disclosure for the specific balance you hold, including any bank sweep.
This guide is education from Northline Guides, not a recommendation to buy or sell any security, and not a page from Charles Schwab. Broker steps change. Use Get help if you want Northline to walk through the screen. That request does not open a case at Charles Schwab.
